Chanukah

December 7, 2015 - December 14, 2015

Just thought you might like to know… Chanukah (Hebrew: חֲנֻכָּה) (a.k.a. Hanukkah), is the Festival of Lights. This eight-day Jewish holiday commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd century BCE. According to tradition, after the Maccabees defeated the Greeks, there was only enough oil left to light the menorah in the Temple for one day. But miraculously, the oil lasted for eight days! Though the holiday is not found in the Torah and does not hold great religious significance, it is one of the most popular Jewish holidays. Many Jews celebrating by lighting a chanukkiah (a nine-branched menorah), adding one new candle each night. Other customs include eating latkes (potato pancakes), sufganiot (jelly doughnuts), and other foods fried in oil; and spinning a dreidel (four-sided top). This year, Chanukah begins at sundown on Sunday, December 6 and ends at sundown on Monday, December 14.
