Just thought you might like to know… Tisha B’Av (literally, the 9th day of the month of Av, in Hebrew: תשעה באב) commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem, and the subsequent exile of the Jews from Israel. It is seen as the saddest day on the Jewish calendar, and has also become a day of mourning for later tragic events in our history including, but not limited to, the expulsion of Jews from England, France, and Spain, as well as several key events during the Holocaust.
Needless to say, it is a solemn day- one of contemplation, and for some, fasting. It is not a yom tov, so we carry on with our lives and our work, but remain extra mindful of the goings on in the world around us. Tisha B’Av 2017 begins at sundown on Monday, July 31 and ends at sundown on Tuesday, August 1.
